Over 20 venues were reviewed by four Durban judges for the 2018 round of the Shisanyama Awards in Durban. Five semi-finalists have been chosen:
– Unique Lounge, Umhlanga
– Seaman’s Corner Restaurant and Bar, Hammersdale
– The Joint Beach & Jazz Cafe, South Beach, Durban
– Sbu’s Lounge, Inanda
– Cafe Skyzer, Chesterville
The judging was undertaken by the credible line-up of foodies including Buhle Mbonambi, Editor for the Independent Newspaper Group’s SM magazine; Dennis Ngxongo founder of marketing agency DNA and long time judge in the Café Society Awards; Sdu Gerasch an avid foodie specialising in authentic African cuisines; and Meleney Cunniff, previous boutique hotel manager with years of hospitality experience.
Venues were judged according to a 50 point scoring system that looks to reward excellence in food, service, venue and ambience.
All the semi finalists have been invited to cook at the Shisanyama Festival presented by Durban Tourism. The event is being held at Eyadini Lounge, Umlazi for two days on 1 & 2 September. Winners of the Shisanyama Awards will be announced on stage on Sunday 2 September at the Festival.
“Whilst we are inviting the venues to cook at the Festival, their participation in the event does not contribute towards their ability to win the Awards” explains founder of the Shisanyma Awards, Michelle Lewis. “Cooking at the Festival is an opportunity to further promote their businesses. All judges from the Shisanyama Awards will be visiting the venues during the month of August to determine the winner” Lewis explains. “They’re looking for consistency in service, food and ambience. The venue that can deliver this promise to all five judges, will win! The race is on”.
